Point 23 - Shot list and shooting script

Here is our shot list and shooting script. The images are in the wrong order, and so how they are now, the right order is from the bottom to the top. The images which we have drawn within the shooting script more or less show where our locations will be. Ie; in a bedroom, outside, in a kitchen- etc.

Point 22- Animatic of our storyboard

Here is our Animatic of our storyboard. We will most likely add in new shots- ie, more close ups and landscape shots. The soundtrack on this is a rough copy as we had limited time to get the right sounds. We will probably record our own sounds in order to create a more unique effect.

Point 21 - Soundtrack of our movie

We have come together as a group and decided that for our sound, we are thinking of using a soundtrack that fits our pictures. The sound track would be quite eerie, and would fade in and out, throughout the title sequence. When the little girl talks, the music will fade out, then swooshing wind sound effects, the use of foley sounds will be sounds of footsteps, and breathing. There are 12 different points so far in our storyboard which we will expand on, and we will decide on a range of shots and editing to use within our film opening. However, for the soundtrack, we have mainly decided to use a dark and creepy soundtrack which will play throughout, and fade in and out for the one part of dialogue. We will also use eery noises such as crows squaking and footsteps. The rough copy of our Soundtrack is in the background of our animatic in point 22.

Point 20 - storyboard

Here is our storyboard, we will also add in titles and sound throughout. We will also use a range of different shots, for example we will use close ups, and probably do a couple shots per point above.

Point 19 - Narrative Theories

The Todorov Narrative Theory:

(I found a majority of this information on this website - http://dtugby10.wordpress.com/the-todorov-narrative-theory-within-bond/ ).

Here is information about The Todorov Narrative Theory - and how it links into Bond films. The information I found is in blue and my comments and information on it is in pink.

Izetan Todorov was a Bulgarian structuralist linguist publishing influential work on narrative from the 1960’s. Todorov suggested that stories begin with an equilibrium or status quo where any potentially opposing forces are in balance. This is interrupted by a series of events; problems are solved so that order can be restored to the world of the fiction. Todorov claimed that conventional narratives are structured in five different stages.
  • A state of equilibrium at the outset
  • A disruption of the equilibrium by some action.
  • A recognition that there has been a disruption.
  • An attempt to repair the disruption
  • A reinstatement of the equilibrium.
Todorov's narrative structure is used very often and is used in a lot of 'mainstream' film narratives. Here I have found an example of his theory used within the opening sequence of James Bond, as the opening sequence of the famous film 'Quantum of Solace' follows Todorov's theory:

  • The equilibrium in this opening sequence is the protagonist agent (James Bond) as he is the character that the viewer wants to succeed. The villain in the plot is the man chasing after Bond in an attempt to kill him.
  • At the beginning of the film, there is a moving establishing shot of the island to set the location and take the audience through the surroundings. At 0.56 and 0.59, there is an ECU of the actor Daniel Craig then a dark shadow casts over his face to show a sense mystery of this character. This use of minimal lighting is very effecting at representing the characteristics of the character. Also with the shot, idealises the determination and sorrow in his eyes, which is very effective.
  • All of the James Bond films follow Todorov’s theory as they have the agent and villain(s) that fight out a battle of hatred towards each other. Often there is a female involved and participate in a journey throughout the film consisting of car chases and brutal fights to try and complete the main aim of the film.

Here is a good view on Todorov's theory- I think that we can use this for our opening sequence in our movie as it seems as though by using his theory, it creates tension and makes the viewers curious about what is going to happen. I think that this is going to be an important thing for us to use with our opening sequence because of our theme being 'Thriller'.  Here is a diagram to show Todorov's theory:

Point 18 - Storyline for our film

IDEAS FOR OUR STORYLINE-

  •   Tense
  •   Flashbacks/foreseeing
  •   Girl- alone
  •   Man, overpowering
  •   Eery lighting
- Girl is alone, man walks away from her- don't know what happened between them, but either he found something out about her which she did, or she told him to leave. He seems to want revenge on her. She made a mistake. He begins watching her, and haunting her. He plots against her, but we do not know exactly what his plans are. Could he be wanting revenge on her? Or on somebody else? Is it him who did something wrong and not her? We see hints of suspicion of murder. The girl is creeped out, keeps seeing things. Throughout the film there is a creepy soundtrack- children's toy music? a child singing? a single string note on the violin? plucking on a guitar? ..soundtrack must be tense/eery.

I have created this mood board as well as my last one to show what I am thinking and give imagery for my ideas
*Incomplete- will come together as a group, and finalise this point.

Point 17 - Key elements we need to use in our film

Here is a checklist of things we need to include for our film- here are some more things we will need to think about, and things we will most likely need to include:

  • Good lighting- cannot be dark
  • Casting
  • Dialogue?
  • Range of shots- goes with 'Range of Editing' above
  • Story line- but only for the first 2 minutes
  • NO RUNNING THROUGH WOODS

Point 16 - institution which may produce, distribute and exhibit our film

SOMEBODY WHO MAY DISTRIBUTE OUR FILM: http://www.metrodomegroup.com After researching to find an institution which could support and distribute our film, I found 'Metrodome Group'. This is an organisation set up to help movies with a lower budget, and support adverts for movies which less advanced people are making- or something similar to what we are doing, and to air them- not for the interest of money, but in order to help young people move forward in their careers. Above is a link to the Medrodome Group website and a screenshot of how it looks. Here is a link to some of the youtube searches of movies which metrodome have supported : http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=metrodome+distribution&sm=3

Point 15 - Audience Categories

Here is how we would categorise a family film audience. Through age, class and gender, we were able to decide. Also- Here is how we would categorise a film for an audience of 15+. Also by looking at age, class and gender. We got these graphs on the 'Pearl and Dean' website- on this link - http://business.pearlanddean.com/audience_profile

Point 14- Perfect Audience Member

We went onto the UKtribes website, and decided that 'alternative' would be the best audience for us. Here is a drawing of our perfect audience member.

Point 13 - Audience Research

Here is our audience research. We decided to make a video because we thought it would be more effective to be able to see what people thought rather than just read about it.

Point 12- Mood board

Here is my mood board which I made in order to portray some of my thoughts on what we could include in our video. Our theme has stayed with Independent Thriller, and I thought that these pictures would all link in well with the theme. The 'A' is a type of font which I thought we could use because it looks like a blood stain, and it would make people curious and a little scared, which is what we want. I put a picture of a misty forest because I thought that it would be spooky, as well as putting a photo of a man on his own in the middle of nowhere, and a picture of a little girl alone in her house, as well as a photo of a lone skull in the middle of a desert. I thought that although the photos are quite different, they would all show how alone people can be, and it would also make people wonder what the stories of these photos are. I think that all of the photos in this mood board make people think, which is exactly what we are wanting to come out of this video.

Point 11 - 9 key shots

Here is my explination on the 9 shots of the opening of 'Skyfall'. I used this film opening because I think that it is really well filmed and that there are some effective shots used. I have put the name of the shots by each shot as well as a short explination about why I chose those particular shots.

Textual analysis- point 10

I have looked at the opening title sequence for the movie ‘Skyfall’, and I have looked at the 4 main textual analysis points- Cinematography, Mise-en-scene, editing and sound. Cinematography- In the ways of cinematography for this opening sequence, there are many shots used. I think that the shots used most regularly is a long shot. I think that this is so that we can see everything that is going on in the scene, another shot used regularly is an establishing shot. This shot is a shot in order to set the scene, and when there are shots of Skyfall House, there is a red overlay on it, in order to show that evil happens there, and also, within the shots of Skyfall House, there is always something going on outside it, for example, near the end of the sequence, there is a shot of the house, with raining blood outside which are tearing apart things outside and destroying things on the outside of the house. I think that this is effective because it shows you that the scene of which was once calm and peaceful, has been destroyed completely throughout the playing of the sequence. This foreshadows what is going to happen to the house during the movie, and makes the audience think that something bad is going to happen to or at the house. Mise-en-scene – The mise-en-scene in this particular sequence is complicated as there is a lot of things which are seen. The total theatre of this piece shows darkness and makes the audience think. It is hard to discuss the acting in this, but there is some as there are people who are in character within this sequence. James Bond is in the sequence, and at the beginning he is drowning, I think that this represents him drowning in the world of villains, because as he sinks deeper and deeper into the sea, there are more and more things being questioned and destroyed. This shows that the deeper he gets into things, the worse things get. Editing- The editing in this particular opening sequence is simple, as it is just jump-cuts and fades through into the new scenes. The fact that the editing isn’t so complicated, allows for the shots and scenes which are used to have more of an effect on the audience. Sound- Skyfall, Sang by Adele.

Graphic Breakdown - point 9

Here is the graphic breakdown for the opening of 'the conjuring', which I chose because it is an independent thriller, like 'trust'. This is for point 10.

Thriller Opening Sequence- point 8 (pt 1)

Here is an Opening Sequence of a film which we found on YouTube. It was made by a media class last year, and we thought it would be a really good example for us as we are looking into Thriller movies. We have chosen the advert for 'Trust' which is an independent thriller, and so we are looking into thrillers. In this particular piece, it begins with a shot of the girl with a gun wound to her forehead, and she jolts awake. She wakes up in a room where everything is white, and she gets dressed and puts on a black and white stripey top. I think that the thin black lines on her top shows that she has hints of evil within her, and that she isn't actually as pure as the white in the rest of the opening sequence. I also think that the snow outside is trying to represent purity, but when the girl dressed in black begins to follow the main girl, you see that there is evil approaching.

Here is more research on thrillers -

Common thriller films include...
-The Dark Knight
-Jaws
-Twister and many more!

These types of movies can be identified by the following traits...
-Suspense
  • to give the veiwer the feeling of fascination to the movie, with excitement and mixed aprehension.
  • Gives veiwer on-edge feeling.
  • Suspense is about conflict and the obstacles between the protagonist and his goal.
  • suspense is often mixed with hope and fear.
-Themes and characters
  • Themes: ransoms, captivities, heists, revenge, mind games, kidnapping, stalking, death traps and paranoia.
-Main elements
  • The protagonist is faced with death, either his and/or her or someone else's.
-he's faced against a problem (usually death), sometimes an escape or a mystery. Most emphasis on the movie is placed on the protagonist.
  • The force of the antagonist's must initially be stronger/wiser than the protagonist's.
-This makes the protaganist have to fight, and be fearfull of the antagonist.
  • The main storyline for the protagonist is either a quest or a character that cannot be put down.
  • The main plotline focuses on a mystery that must be solved.
  • The film's narrative construction is overpowered by the protagonist's point of view.
  • All action and characters must be credibly realistic or natural in their representation on screen.
  • The protagonist and antagonist may battle, themselves and each other, not just on a physical level, but on a mental one as well.
  • Either by accident or their own curiousness, each character is dragged into a dangerous fights or a situation that they aren't prepared to resolve.

Selected film brief- point 6

As a group, we have selected the film brief for 'Trust', it is an independent thriller, and we think that it has potential to draw people in, and we think that we can make it really effective by using a range of shots. We are going to cast a number of people to play the roles, and film it around the school. We will most likely use teachers to play the parents- if not, older looking year 13s. We are going to need a lot of people if we are going to make it the exact same as the advert, so we are going to adapt it to fit what is most convenient.

Jelly Baby Task - point 5

Here is our Jelly Baby Task. We have used 5 different shots, each of which show the emotions of the Ginger Jelly Baby at the time. For example, we used two long shots at the beginning in order to show his happiness against his loneliness. Enjoy!

Prelim Task- point 4

Here is our prelim task of two boys meeting, we have included the required shots.

Rolling Productions- LOGO. Point 1

Here is the logo for Rolling Productions, we thought that by having the red carpet rolling out would be effective.
